UNDERPRESSURE
ESTHER MATHIS AND RIIKKA TAURIAINEN
SOUND: KAY ZHANG

Exhibition: 11 March - 25 April 2021

The title UNDERPRESSURE refers to the process of pressure equalisation, in which the same pressure is created in two or more separate spaces filled with the same medium. With the site-specific installation Esther Mathis and Riikka Tauriainen create a room, which is able to reverse or dissolve the perceived physical attributes - pressure from above, resistance from below. The installation is reinforced by Kay Zhang’s soundscape, conceived for the exhibition.

FROM SENSIBLE POOLS AND SNAIL CONNECTIONS

Online: 31.01.21 – 14.03.21

This process-based performative video explores slime as binding matter and snails as nods of connective tissue. Slime is a vibrant matter (J. Bennett) with tangled molecules, both a liquid and a solid depending on its relational description, that creates a sticky infrastructure. Erotic filaments, protective shells, permeable skin, mucilaginous sounds, intertwine in the ambiguous space that slime provides. When does the body of a snail end; if its osmotic permeable skin and the slimes on which it glides, confuse the limit? Video Performance developed by Paloma Ayala, Jeanne Jacob and Riikka Tauriainen.

RIVER ORACLE - ONLINE

Read your fortune! Here
River Oracle is online: 24.1. – 14.3.2021
The River Oracle is meant to be a situating tool for self reflection, asking questions to the river, wondering what it can tell us. The cards are trying to find their way into material reality through you. We are not particularly interested in thinking about the oracle as a tool to predict your future. What we actually want is for you to connect with your present, with a sense of deep knowledge, in order to embrace (self-) awareness. The cards are printed by water and infused with stories created by an encounter of artists in the riverine ecology of the Rhein.

with interventions and talks by the philosophers Boyan Manchev, Stanimir Panayotov, and Gerald Raunig

Curated by Dimitrina Sevova
Co-curated by Katharina Swoboda

«Digital Dramatizations – Ecologies from the Future» approaches ecology through an interspecies performance in a collaboration with non-human agents at the intersections of theater, theatricality, (un)acting and contemporary art. It concerns how ecological thought and its method of dramatization(s) can open up the potentialities of ecologies from the future, of life after life, of nature after nature, of the future after the future. It dis-plays new speculative realities caused by artistic experiment and sensibilization, which is a dramatization of data in the gap between what things are and how they are represented as data. «Digital Dramatizations» strives to find objects, not the raw sense of data, and dis-play them because the world of things calls for art. Ecological awareness is futurality and aesthetics from the future. And the object of art is the unknowable yet to come: «Art is (from) the future.»

HYDROCOMMONS: WATERY BODIES AND FLUID EXCHANGE

September 8 - September 29, 2018
Opening, September 7 // 7 PM
www.raumstation.cc

Living bodies are necessary for the proliferation of the Hypersea, which arose when life moved out of marine waters and by necessity folded a watery habitat «back inside of itself.» When we drink a glass of water, we amplify this Hypersea, as we sustain our existence through other webs of physical intimacy and fluid exchange.

In this act of ingestion, we come into contact with all of our companion species that inhabit the watershed from which that water was drawn — book lice, swamp cabbage, freshwater mussel. But we connect with the sedimentation tanks, and rapid-mix flocculators that make that water drinkable, and the reservoir, and the rainclouds, too. Hypersea extends to include not only terrestrial flora and fauna, but also technological, meteorological, and geophysical bodies of water. (Astrida Neimanis)

Opening: Thursday February 22, 2018 7 pm

Riikka Tauriainen: Ghosts, Nodes, Webs and Pathways
duration: 13’29’’
voice: Kate Baur-Bridgman

In Riikka Tauriainen's artistic practice, various fields of knowledge production are put into relation and from time to time deconstructed. To generate narratives, she draws connections among others between Karen Barad’s interpretation of the quantum field theory and Elizabeth Grosz's feminist "time travels". The video invites us on a journey, with recordings from the spacecraft "Gaia", which takes our galaxy 5 million years to the future. Space, time and matter enter into an intra-action through voices and sound textures and question the narratives of sciences and their discourses.

Colonialist influenced mindsets, imagery, and categories of knowledge that are still in effect today are the departure points; their historic structures are to be laid bare and examined. The artists follow experiences of oppression, resistance, and migration in their research, which encompasses travel reports, life stories, plant worlds, photographs and other objects. They investigate where and in what ways traces are still visible, and critically discuss ways to deal with archives and archival material today as well as their own roles as knowledge producers.

The exhibition not only reveals gaps in the historiography, but also challenges the kind of knowledge that was produced in the context of the colonial projects and circulated Europe. Who produces knowledge about the world and in which way? How do the complex intersections between racism and sexism continue to affect us, and how can we imagine and practise feminism transculturally and in solidarity?

The event is composed of urban interventions, drifting walks, strolls and performative situations and other means of cacophonic molecular machinic becoming, affected by dramatizing and diagrammatizing practices of the political forms of coordination mapping singularities. The event is oriented towards the politics of location and micropolitical locomotion as an a-signifying process animating the vital multiplicity of organization of ethico-aesthetic living forms.

Mittwoch, 12. Dezember 2012, 18 Uhr

1. Live life as usual and do whatever you always do.
2. Observe life until it reveals its structure.
3. Write down the structure of a simple, daily gesture (drinking coffee, showering, waking up, paying at the supermarket...) very precisely and without interpretation.
4. Do not add anything to it. You should be just a transcriber, and not a translator, without pretending you have a role in this.
5. Be aware that the only thing asked of you is to be present, to notice the details of everyday life that make us all common.
